Day 2: H/D City Tour in private.
BarraOur tour commences in Barra that boasts the best and liveliest city beaches, bars, restaurants and nightlife. It lies at the tip of a long shoreline of beaches, most shaded by palms and with grassy areas. We then proceed to the old historic section of Salvador, the Upper City (Cidade Alta). It was in this area that the Portuguese built their fortified city that was to become Brazil's first capital. Some of the most important examples of colonial architecture in the Americas can be found on the hilltops.

PelourinhoPelourinho, meaning 'whipping post', was once the site of a pillory where slaves were publicly tortured and sold. Carefully restored in 1993, it is today considered to be the finest example of Portuguese colonial architecture in the world. Continuing towards the Cathedral of Bahia, we pass the Lacerda Elevator that links the Upper City with the Lower City. The Cathedral of Bahia was built in 1692 and served as a Jesuit center until the order was expelled from all Portuguese territories in 1759.

The Facade is one of the earliest examples of Baroque and Rococo in Brazil, an architectural style that was to dominate the churches built in the 17th and 18th centuries. Before leaving, we shall raise our eyes to admire its impressive ceiling. East of the Praça da Sé, we encounter a further masterpiece of colonial sacred art: the Igreja São Francisco. The main body of the church is the most exuberant example of Baroque in the country. Its simple Facade belies the treasure inside. The cedar woodcarving and later gold leaf was completed after 28 years in 1748. In view of these unique colonial relics it is not surprising that the historic center of Salvador is a national monument and also protected by UNESCO. Lunch not included. Tours positions may change.

Bahian CuisineDay 3: Bahia by Night show & dinner in private (drinks not included). This evening will bring to light why Salvador is described as the most African city in the Western Hemisphere. The influences of African traditions in Salvador can be best seen and appreciated in two areas: Food and Music. After a dinner-buffet featuring a wide variety of tidbits from the Bahian cuisine we will have the opportunity to "look into the soul" of Brazil by experiencing its music and dances. Brazilian music draws heavily on its African roots. It is fused with pulsating African polyrhythms and its dance forms incorporate features that have been brought to Brazil by African slaves.
