Aswan is famous for its botanical garden and nearby the ancient stronghold of the Elephantine Island that separates the Nile into two channels opposite Aswan. Then there is the Agha Kahan Mausoleum which is styled after the Fatimid tombs. The interior shrine of the mausoleum is made of marble. The Monastery of St. Simeon was rebuilt in the 10th century and was a refuge for missionary monks who converted the Nubians to Christianity.

One of the famous sites is the Unfinished Obelisk which was possibly intended as a companion to the Lateran Obelisk originally at Karnak and now in Rome. The northern hills of the west bank is abound in rock-hewn tombs of princes dating from the Old Kingdom to the Roman period. Inside the Tomb of the Nobles are decorated murals depicting scenes of everyday life and inscriptions showing the noblemen journeys into Africa.
