ATHENS

The city of Athens is spread out over a large area contained by three large hills. Fortunately for the traveler the most important and interesting sites are congregated in the middle of the city around the Acropolis. Standing like a flagship over the center of Greece, the Acropolis is an amazing testament to the lifestyle, wealth, and devotion of the ancient Greeks.
Athens

There are countless ruins and uncovered archaeological sites that appear throughout the Plaka, the old neighborhood surrounding the Acropolis. Athens is also home to the country's best museums. If you are a museums buff, you could spend over a week just walking the hallways of history. The modern side of Greece is apparent in the vibrant nightlife, abundance of nightclubs and bars, the upcoming 2004 Olympic Games, and the crowded buzz that envelops you as you walk the streets of Athens.

Acropolis
Acropolis
The Acropolis is the site of the major temples of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, the most well known, of course, being the Parthenon, begun in 447 BC and completed in 432 . The Parthenon and other main buildings on the Acropolis were built by Pericles in the fifth century BC as a monument to the cultural and political achievements of the inhabitants of Athens.

The term 'acropolis' means upper city and many of the city states of ancient Greece are built around an acropolis where the inhabitants can go as a place of refuge in times of invasion. It's for this reason that the most sacred buildings are usually on the acropolis. During the Classical period (450-330 B.C.) three important temples were erected on the ruins of earlier ones: the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Nike, dedicated to Athena Parthenos, Athena Polias, and Athena-Apteros Nike, respectively. The Erechtheion is a lovely building originally dedicated to the devotion of several old divinities. The temple is famous for its porch, which instead of pillars is supported by six female statues called Caryatids.

Acropolis Museum

It is one of the most important museums in the world. It temporarily houses masterpieces of the ancient Greek civilization, dedicated to the most important of the Athenian sanctuaries, the "temenos" of Athena Parthenos.

Syntagma Square

The Square has a long history. It seems every major event in Greece's modern history has either been mourned or celebrated here. The classical style of architecture, known as neo-classical which originated in Greece and is the dominant style of all the old public buildings, houses and mansions of Athens, was actually re-imported into Greece in the late eighteen hundreds from Europe and then modified (improved) by Greek architects. The tomb of the unknown soldier is guarded by Evzones, the elite soldiers who also guard the Palace and are chosen for their height and strength. At 6 pm you can see the changing of the guard while dodging pigeons. If you have children they will probably enjoy feeding them with the nuts that are sold there.
