Central Anatolia region

Central Anatolia Region, in the centre of Turkey a completely land locked region. It occupies the area between the two zones of the folded mountains, which extend to the east merging into a point. This arid highland is the heartland of the country. Konya Ovasi and Tuz Golu (Salt Lake) are the largest basin on the plateau.

Ankara
Ankara the capital city of Turkey is situated on the eastern edge of the great, high Anatolian Plateau. Ankara was on the caravan route an important trading centre. It was the base from where the War of Liberation was directed.

Anitkabir (Ataturk Mausoleum) the mausoleum of Kemal Ataturk who was the founder of the Turkish Republic. A museum houses his photographs, letters, and other belongings.

The Temple of Augustus, Haci Bayram Mosqu, the Ankara Citadel has fine traditional architecture, the 15 m high Column of Julian, with its leaf decoration. The Museum of Anatolian Civilization has a unique collection of artefacts of the different civilizations which have occupied this area. The Roman Bath with its separate sections the hot, cold and cool.

Cappadocia
Cappadocia is famous for its amazing rock formations, and its underground cities with there chapels, monasteries and living accommodations, all carved out of from volcanic rock.

For the adventurous there is Hot Air Ballooning, early in the morning, you can watch the sun rise over the stunning Cappadocia landscape while you gently drift across the valleys and chimneys below. One of the modern, most unique and popular attractions of Cappadocia.

Konya
Konya also known as Ikonyon, Ikonyum, Iconium, legend has it that a dragon had been killed be Perseus, in whose honor an obelisk had been erected. Archaeologists survey show that Konya is one of the most ancient towns of this area.

Goreme
Gorem has been drawing tourist to itself, for its open air museum and fairy tale chimney charm. Buckle Church has beautiful frescos. Karanlik Church (recently restored with its freshly painted frescos)

Avanos
Avanos is on the banks of the Red River known for its rich clay deposits due to which the pottery industry has dominated this city.Watch potter’s work on their ware, some of whom will encourage you to try it yourself. Hamam, (Turkish bath) Caravanserai (traveler’s service station) Ozkonak (Underground city).

Ihlara Valley
Ihlara gorge is 16 km long and is lined with churches carved into rocks.

Underground City of Derinkuyu
One of the most famous underground city’s of Cappadocia Derinkuyu is worth seeing. Derinkuyu is a 8 level descend into the Anatolian plateau. Four out of the eight levels of tunnels are open to visitors. The intricate structure of interconnecting passages through which it would be difficult to find one’s way is truly amazing. Besides Derinkuyu there are about 40 other such settlements.
Kayseri
Kayseri city spreads out at the foot of the extinct volcanic Mt. Erciyes. During winter there is excellent opportunity to ski down its slopes. Here is the first school of anatomy the Cifte Madressa. At The Sultan Marshes, one will find many bird species of interest to Nature lovers as well as Ornithologists.
Aksaray
Aksaray set in wonderful surroundings of natural beauty, has some important historical buildings. Viransehir due to its strategic position was a military centre. Ihlara a fascinating canyon formed by the Melendiz River. In its valleys are many buildings and chapels cut into the canyon rock decorated with frescos. The Hasan Mountain which is an ancient volcano is a great place for mountain sports and climbing.
Nigde
Nigde is a commercial centre. Exquisite Seljuk art and architecture fills the city of Nigde. At Aladaglar, and at Bolkarlar there are centres for winter sports. There is a unique flower that grows here the ‘Kardelen Flower’ surviving the snow it blooms through it.
Sivas
Sivas is the highest city in this region, on a mountainous area, it has numerous peaks. Here you will see many notable monuments. Divirgi Southeast of Sivas has remains of Uln Mosque the portal is in Baroque style a masterpiece of stonework (declared an eminent cultural heritage of the world by the UNESCO) Balikli Kaplica is a spa, it is a thermal spring, with fish living in its waters.
Eskisehir
Eskisehir is the oldest settlement in the Anatolia region. Meerschaum stone ware originated here and one can see some of the best samples at the Meerschaum Museum it is a white stone, the most common item made from the stone is smoke pipes.
Cankiri
Cankiri is 131 Km from Ankara. The predominant influence of many tribes has been a part of this town. An attraction for nature lovers and winter sports enthusiasts is the Ilgaz Mountain with its snowy peaks and a variety of fauna in its woodlands. Turkey’s most beautiful peak with modern facilities at its ski centre.
