TURKISH DELIGHTS BEYOND ISTANBUL

Turkish Cuisine - Click to EnlargeTurkey has lots to offer as a destination starting with Istanbul – the only city which is located in two continents – Asia and Europe and separated by the Bosphorus. A cruise on the Bosphorus strait is the right way to start your trip in Istanbul followed by visits to the Haghia Sophia which is now converted into a Museum and was built in AD 537 and is one of the world’s greatest architectural monuments, originally a church and later converted into a Mosque in the 15th Century by the Ottomans.

Other highlights of Istanbul include the Topkapi Palace which houses the finest collections of the Ottoman Sultans comprising of ceramics, silver and glass ware, imperial costumes and treasury.

Formula 1 Racing - Click to EnlargeThe Blue Mosque with fine Iznic tiles is one of the most famous icons of Istanbul. Istanbul hosted the second edition of Grand Prix Formula 1 this August which was attended by more than 200000 visitors. Beyond Istanbul you can fly down to Izmir and explore the region of Kusadasi – a popular beach town famous for fine shopping, restaurants and just an hour away you can visit the Island of Samos and voilà you are in Greece.

Pammukale - Click to Enlarge Closeby, you can visit the Cotton Castle of Pammukale – one of the natural wonders which have white terraces formed out of hot springs which have lost their carbon dioxides and left behind deposits of limestone thus building layers of white calcium carbonate. Nearby you can also visit the Antique Pool where Cleopatra used to take a dip and is littered with fragments of marble columns and is in the Hierapolis area.
Library of Ephesus - Click to EnlargeThe ancient city of Ephesus is one of the greatest ruined cities in the western world and was built as a Greek City in 1000 BC. The main highlights of the city is the Library of Celsus built between AD 114-117 and the magnanimous amphitheatre where even the likes of Elton John and Sting have performed and which has a seating capacity of 30000 spectators. The House of Virgin Mary is nearby and after exploring some fantastic sights along the Aegean Coast, fly down to Kayseri and visit Cappadocia in Central Anatolia – a spectacular region of fine landscape formed naturally by hardened volcanic ash created 30 million years ago and covers an area of 300 sq kilometers.

Cappadocia - Click to Enlarge It would be recommended to take a hot air balloon ride over this region to see the spectacular volcanic formations. These are some of the areas of Turkey you can visit in the coming holiday season and fortunately there are direct flights on Turkish Airlines from Mumbai which takes you to Istanbul in 6 hours and 30 minutes.
