On arrival in Johannesburg, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Sandton. Johannesburg is known as the City of Gold, or iGoli in the local Nguni language. The city is high-voltage nouveau riche territory, fast-paced, fun – a modern, cosmopolitan metropolis packed with vitality and verve. In the Sandton business district, fortunes are made by the astute in the Stock Exchange every day. Skyscrapers tower over chic boutiques, aromatic Indian bazaars, and African multi (medicine) shops where traditional healers dispense advice and herbal remedies. At leisure to relax and rest after your long flight. The hotel is located in the Nelson Mandela Square (Former Sandton Square) and therefore easy to enjoy the many shops and restaurants in the square and shopping centre.

The tour also includes an underground visit, gold pour demonstration, and a miners’ dancing performance.

Visit Soweto, a sprawling township that is estimated to be inhabited by over two million people. Homes range from affluent mansions to makeshift shacks. Soweto residents belong to nine different ethnic groups, Zulus and Xhosas predominating. The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, reputed to be the largest general hospital in the southern hemisphere, provides training and medical services of a high standard.

Visit Freedom Square: it was here that the Freedom Charter was presented to the people of South Africa in 1955.

Today, with its majestic Table Mountain backdrop, Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and is still known for its friendly hospitality to travellers.

The city is an eclectic blend of cobbled streets in the Bo-Kaap district, and the high-rise buildings of commerce and industry. It is a shopper's delight, providing hours of browsing through antique shops, galleries, and modern malls, as well as being a treat for lovers of fine foods and wines.

Day 9: Cape Town
You will be collected for a full day of touring, firstly the city and mountain and then on to the Cape Winelands.

City orientation to see the Castle, Green Market Square and city centre. Visit Table Mountain in a revolving cablecar which takes just 3 minutes to ascend this extraordinary mountain. Stunning views await you over Cape Town and its surroundings.

Continue on to the nearby Cape Winelands. Franschhoek, one of the most well known wine producing valleys of the region. It is famed as the “hoek of France” for its wines and cuisine, influenced by the French Huguenots who settled in the valley in 1688.

The French Huguenots fled from Europe to escape religious persecution. In the Cape they were given land on which to settle. Although they were not allowed to form a separate community, and in fact their assimilation into the German and Dutch community was relatively rapid, their influence on the wine industry was profound. Today also, the graceful architecture in this region is reminiscent of the French heritage. The Huguenot Memorial in Franschhoek is well worth a visit, as is the adjacent Museum complex.
